A campaign lead by James Douglas, editor of the 'Sunday Express' (who wrote "I would rather give a healthy boy or a healthy girl a phial of prussic acid than this novel") resulted in an obscenity trial in November 1929 which lasted for eight days, the judge ultimately ordering the book destroyed. A magnificently preserved copy of the author's celebrated lesbian novel, for decades the best known novel of its type in English. Very good indeed in non-price-clipped dust wrapper, very lightly toned at the spine panel with several tiny slivers of loss from the upper edge and two short internally repaired tears.
